SUMMARY:Hispanic Heritage Art Session
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the vibrant cultures\, traditions\, and creativity of Hispanic/Latino communities through art!  \nJoin us for hands-on\, members-only activities—no experience required. Explore 3 dynamic art lessons you can take back to your students to show how people across cultures use the arts as a powerful form of communication. \nArt activities include a Dia de los Muertos project using foil relief mounted on paper (can be adapted K-12). Next\, we journey to the ancient Mayan world to design zodiac calendars with crayon rubbings on sandpaper\, transferred onto muslin squares (for students 3rd-8th grade). Our final piece draws inspiration from the Caribbean Taino culture\, where students will use watercolor to reimagine traditional Taino symbols with a contemporary twist (can be adapted K-12). \nCelebrate heritage\, exchange stories\, and create meaningful art together! \n \nAll supplies will be provided. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, September 30 from 5-6pm at the MTEA Building.  Please register below to ensure we have enough supplies.

SUMMARY:Dr. King Art Build
DESCRIPTION:Art Build At MTEA In Preparation for the Martin Luther King Contests  \nTheme: “True Peace”  \nThis collaborative artwork will be inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote:\n“True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”  \nParticipants will work together to create a large visual piece combining two powerful images:  \n\nTree of Justice and Peace: At the center\, a strong tree with deep roots will symbolize how justice provides the foundation for peace. The roots will be labeled Justice\, and the branches and leaves will be labeled Peace\, showing that true peace can only grow from fairness and equality. Participants will create a leaf with imagery or text that will explore what true peace means to them in their classrooms and/or personal life. \n\n\nBridge of Unity: Flowing across the composition\, a bridge will represent people actively working together to create justice symbolizing collaboration\, courage\, and the ongoing journey toward peace. \n\nTogether\, the tree and the bridge will form a powerful metaphor: peace is not passive but built and nurtured through justice and collective action. Each participant will contribute to the roots and branches making the piece a shared vision of Dr. King’s dream.  \n*If the piece is not completed at this session\, we will meet again to complete it.  \nIndividual Art Making:  \nTeachers will learn about visual journaling and practice three different techniques that can be used to build imagery or use as a background with their students for the MLK Jr. art contest. All materials will be provided.  Do not wear your best clothes!  \nJoin us on Monday\, September 29th\, 2025 from 5 pm- 6 pm at MTEA Building.  Please register below to ensure we have enough supplies for all.
