Voter Resources
As a collective, MTEA has significant strength to turn out voters and help elected officials understand the importance of the issues that affect MPS students, workers and families. By having a robust political program, we help to build power for our union to improve our school district and our city.

Why it's important for MTEA to be involved in politics
Whether we like it or not, public education has become a partisan political issue in recent years with the Republican Party and some Democrats working every day to dismantle our public schools and replace them with unaccountable, private voucher and charter schools. Far-right groups want to legislate their own views on what aspects of American history should be taught, and which they would like us to forget. And they want to take voice and opportunities away from students based on issues like race, language, gender and sexual orientation.
With more than 5,600 members, MTEA has a responsibility to fight to make sure all Milwaukee children, no matter their zip code, have access to well-funded public schools that teach them the truth about our nation’s history – good and bad – so they can become engaged citizens who work to create a more just society as adults.
We need to make sure children are in public schools that are responsive to publicly elected school boards – not private voucher and charter schools operated by corporate boards of directors who are shielded from public records laws that allow parents, families and community members to hold them accountable.
The way we do that is by educating our community about current issues in public education and the importance of electing public school champions who will fight to make sure all children have the opportunities they deserve.
